Cyndi Lauper Reacts to Her Tony Nod: 'I Was Laughing, I Was Crying, I Was Screaming—It Was Better Than Cats'

The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. “All I can say is ‘OMG OMG OMG. Everybody really say yeah!’ I’m really excited. I watched it live. I was jumping up and down. I was laughing; I was crying; I was screaming—it was better than Cats. I can’t believe it. I’m so relieved and I’m so glad. I can’t believe that we had this idea, and I got to work with friends and then we got this wonderful cast. It’s different [being a Tony nominee than a Grammy winner] because it’s so collaborative. I had a big team and a real family—this is my Broadway family. I went all over the world [as a performer], and in my own backyard people accepted me. It’s a little like Dorothy. To be recognized by the community like that is so awesome. I called my mother and apologized for wrecking all of her records when I was small and thanked her for bringing all that music in the house.”
